Graphic File Formats (For the Web):

There are three main file formats for graphics that you will use on the Web: GIF, JPEG, and PNG. These three file formats comprise the graphical foundation of the web graphical presentation for static graphic images.

Regarding JPEG and GIF image file formats, in general, JPEG is used exclusively for photos and GIF is for everything else. The JPEG format is designed to handle the continuous tones with very sharp distinctions between objects (particularly, those found in photographs). While the JPEG format is good for pictures, it does not handle very sharp edges, so it is not good for text, cartoons, and other graphics that require hard edges.

GIF format on the other hand is good for images that require clearly defined boundaries and flat colour, such as text, cartoons, and drawings. GIF format also enables the creation of a "transparent" background around an image, enabling the image to blend on to a coloured background on a Web page, rather than a white box associated with a JPEG image.  One drawback with the GIF format, is that it can only display images that contain 256 colours or less.

PNG is a relatively new graphic file format is similar in many respects to GIF, but also will offer advanced transparency options and virtually unlimited colours.  Because PNG is so new, older Internet browsers, such as Internet Explorer 4 can't display PNG files at all, while event IE 6 can display many PNG images with complex transparency.  However, it will be only a few years before most people will have browsers that are compatible with PNG.

:
smiley: The use of punctuation marks and other symbols or characters to portray moods when typing, especially in email messages, IM, SMS and IRC. Here's an example of a simple smiley: smile . If you don't see it, tilt your head to the left and look at it. The colon makes the eyes and the parenthesis makes the smiley mouth. The smile means happiness (like if someone says something funny) or it often denotes sarcasm. Other combinations of characters can express many other emotions. You may also hear them referred to as emoticons.

An online learning environment introduced at the KnowTips conference by Shula Klinger.  It is worth noting that Shula won the prize for best icebreaker by inviting conference participants to describe the chairs they would like to bring into The Attic to sit in.  There were a number of excellent chairs, many of which might interest someone with venture capital to spare.
